Roatan Animals Rescue: Who Are We and What Do We Do?

Roatan Animals Rescue: Who Are We and What Do We Do? ROATAN RESCUE (RR) is a 501c3 registered NGO which funds and operates Roatan's largest no-kill animal shelter.
We also operate a public veterinary clinic providing subsidized and free veterinary care to low income families with special focus on spaying, neutering and disease prevention. More than 150 family pets receive veterinary care at our clinic each month, over 75% are given partial or full subsidy.
We also perform an average of 100 subsidized or free spay and neuter surgeries per month. Roatan Rescue provides emergency rescue and subsequent care of injured, abused and neglected animals and collaborates with local police providing veterinary care and safe haven to animals in abuse and neglect investigations.
Our sanctuary currently is home to 500+ dogs, cats, horses and chickens. We are struggling to provide sufficient space, food, medical care and attention to all of them as we’re far beyond capacity. With 200+ new intakes since January 2021 alone, we are focused on physically expanding our shelter and increasing fundraising.
We must endeavour to rescue more of the ever increasing number of abandoned animals struggling to survive alone on the streets.
Augmenting the number of spays/neuters we perform each month will help reduce the large number of animals being abandoned to endure desperate lives of misery and disease. The worst problems facing the animals of Roatan are over-population, endemic diseases, neglectful and callous attitudes towards their suffering by the human population.
The number of dogs and cats on the island is estimated to be between 70,000 and 150,000. Statistics culled from our medical files show the prevalence of canine infections which could be easily prevented. Infection rates over the last 12 months among dogs brought to our clinic as pets and rescues taken from the streets: ehrlichiosis canis 95% dirofilaria immitis 60% transmissible venereal tumours 20% Human suffering and poverty are rampant here.

Thus cultural and societal attitudes towards animals have never evolved to the level of care and compassion more preva
countries in North America and Europe.
When one cannot feed their children sufficiently on a regular basis, imagine how little the family dog or cat is? Our shelter and veterinary clinic are staffed 24 hours a day 365 days a year by 25 caregivers and 2 veterinarians.
Helping the animals also helps the people by providing 27 much needed full time jobs in the community.
Our mission statement is to End Animal Suffering on Roatan.
Our means to achieve this is to Rescue, Rehabilitate and Rehome Any and All Animals in Need.
We believe all animals deserve a pain free, safe and happy life.
Our generous supporters and donors are the LIFELINE to the helpless and voiceless animals of Roatan as we receive zero funding from any level of the government.

East End Off Shore Snorkeling By Boat

It's hard to go wrong snorkeling anywhere on Roatan. That said, there are good and better places to snorkel.
Roatan Snorkeling is a world-class experience for many good reasons. For starters, the coral reef around Roatan is a barrier reef.
As such, the reef formations are majestic and offer several unique characteristics which are not common elsewhere. Barrier reefs are loosely shaped like a wall or barrier, hence the name. The wall provides two very different snorkeling experiences. On the inside (the area between the barrier wall and the shoreline)
The snorkeling experience is calm and picturesque, filled with colorful corals, turtles, and large schools of fish in sheltered waters.
Outside the barrier, the water turns deep blue the current picks up, and the snorkeling experience overlooks a coral wall which disappears into the abyss. There are larger fish outside the wall and several shipwrecks along the edge of the wall. The views are spectacular.
